BREEDING AIMS: To improve the overall health of the British Bulldog while maintaining as closely as possible, appearance, size and temperament.

HEALTH PROBLEMS OF THE STANDARD BULLDOG: To understand the health problems that we are trying to address simply enter bulldog health problems into google. The Bulldogs health problems are many and varied. They include breathing problems, eye problems; (entropian, ectropian and cherry eye), structural problems, poor hips, poor elbow joints, bloat, inability to mate or give birth naturally, weak immune system and birth abnormalities such as cleft palate, cranial split, spinal curvature, motor neurone problems etc. These problems are a direct result of bad breeding and deliberate, unnecessary exaggeration of the Bulldog's most pronounced features. A short muzzle became no muzzle, a wide chest became a super wide chest, a large head became an enormous head. As these exaggerated dogs found movement more and more difficult they became more and more sedentary, carrying more and more weight their joints deteriorated through lack of use, poor structure and an encouraged lack of activity. In complete contrast to many show dog breeders we encourage our dogs to be active and they are far from lazy. With each subsequant generation our dog's athleticism and activity/energy levels will continue to increase and improve.

BREEDING PROGRAM: Suffolk Bullbreeds are dedicated to producing healthy Bulldogs. We do not in-breed to establish type as this method of breeding has caused many of the health problems listed above. Line breeding is basicly controlled in-breeding. Show breeders and breeders of pure bred dogs use line breeding to get their dogs to breed 'true to type' some breeders breed grandfather to grandaughter, others uncle to neice. In the worst cases breeders put father to daughter, sometimes several times in a row in an attempt to replicate a particular dogs characteristicts as closely as possible. This is why health problems are so commonly found in many 'pure bred' dogs today. Our breedings are from unrelated Hybrid Bulldogs. Though we do not breed to a strict type, our dogs will begin to look more uniform over time as we breed our various Bulldogs together. Our Bulldogs contain between 50% and 75% British Bulldog and small percentages of other Bullbreeds, such as the Bull Mastiff, American Bulldog and other Bullbreed hybrids.

HEALTH: Our Bulldogs have a short, (APPROX 1.5"), muzzle allowing 'free breathing' a more muscular body with tighter skin and more robust joints allowing easier movement and more atheletic activity. A more efficient jaw allowing our dogs to eat a natural, B.A.R.F, (bones and raw foods), diet. A more efficient digestive system, our dogs don't suffer from bloat or digestive problems. A stronger immune system and stronger less vulnerable puppies. This is one of the many advantages of breeding from a wide gene pool.

BREED COMPOSITION: We have mentioned percentages of British Bulldog and other breeds in our breedings. Obviously the genes present in the highest quantity determine the overall appearance of the pups produced from a breeding. We believe that the optimum percentage of British Bulldog genes necessary to produce the correct balance of Appearance and Health is 62.5 %. This may sound very precise but this percentage is easily produced by breeding a 50% with a 75% or a 25% with a 100%. However it isn't as simple as it sounds. To be successful in gaining enough of the British Bulldog look, the remaining 37.5% of the genes must be made up of several Bullbreeds, allowing the British Bulldog genes to be as dominant as possible. The reason for wanting to use the least ammount of British Bulldog genes possible to maintain the appearance and general characteristics of the Bulldog is because it is very difficult to breed out the health problems of the Bulldog in a high percentage,(75% + hydrid). With several other bullbreeds present in the breeding it is possible to use a lower percentage of Bulldog genes to establish dominance and therefore achieve a dog that is more 'Bulldog' in appearance and temperament with much better health. To summarise: It is easy with two breedings to produce a 75% crossbred bulldog with very much the appearance and temperament of a standard Bulldog. This dog however will not be significantly healthier than the standard Bulldog, in fact it may possess many or even all of the health problems, though most dogs bred like this are advertised as being free from the health problems of the standard British Bulldog this is usually far from true. Be carefull of unsubstantiated claims that are impossible to back up. Until a breeder has produced several generations of proven healthy dogs then no such claims should be made. We offer no guarantees about the dogs we produce though so far we have not had any health problems in any of the dogs that we own or have produced.

HEIGHT: Our Bulldogs are on average 16-18" to the shoulder, slightly taller than a standard British Bulldog. Though we own dogs that range from 15"(Bella) to 21"(Edge).

WEIGHT: Our Bulldogs weigh between 45lbs and 85lbs. Though the average dog will be about 65lbs at 17" tall.

PATIENCE: In terms of health, it takes a long time and numerous breedings to produce a better, healthier Bulldog. The resulting dogs are more than worth the extra time taken to breed them. Combine several 'hybrid' Bulldogs bred this way in a series of breedings and the resulting dogs will reflect the time taken to produce them. Our breeding program will remain 'open ended'.....
